The Suicide Awareness and Support Group was
established as part of a community response to the increasing incidents
of suicidal deaths in West Belfast with the particular prevalence to
young adult males. The group have now been in existence for the past
nine years and during this time have provided a self help support group
for families and individuals bereaved through suicide, in a nurturing
and safe environment.
We were instrumental in helping establish support groups across the city
and to date we have published two booklets, “Bereaved Through Suicide”
and Reaching Out” to raise suicide awareness throughout the north of
Ireland.
In addition to the weekly Support Group meetings, trained group members
are available to help anyone in crisis. We are able to arrange
professional help i.e. Counselling if required and when a tragedy has
happened in the community, group members will visit the home to give
assistance if necessary and provide information on services the family
may need. We have recently organised a series of Alternative Therapies
for bereaved family members. Feedback has shown these therapies to be
very successful in helping reduce stress and aid in emotional healing.
This is something that the group would like to explore further.
If you need to talk or need some help please feel free to contact
