HEARING DOGS FOR DEAF PEOPLE, a registered charity established in 1982, trains carefully selected dogs to assist severely or profoundly deaf people. Where possible dogs are chosen from rescue centres or they may have been donated to the charity, thus giving unwanted dogs useful and active lives.

The dogs communicate by touch and then lead to a variety of sounds within the home, workplace or public buildings. They will touch the deaf person on hearing the doorbell, telephone or baby alarm, etc and then lead to the sound source. For a smoke alarm, however, the dog will first touch and then lie down to indicate danger.

One in seven of the UK population has a significant hearing loss.

We are a small charity and receive no government funding relying upon the generosity of the public, companies and trusts. We aim to increase the number of trained dogs so that more deaf people can enjoy greater independence, confidence and security as well as the benefits of companionship, which a hearing dog brings.
